2014 at The Civic, Barnsley

2014 has been a busy year for The Civic; welcoming new and old faces to the building and developing partnerships across the borough and beyond.

As a proud supporter of the arts in South Yorkshire, The Civic continues to showcase high-quality performances and exhibitions. Here are just a few highlights of the year…

Since re-opening in April under the new management, on-site cafe Oak Star Café & Bistro has become the place to be for food and drink in Barnsley town centre. Headed by Gregor and Dawn, in just nine months they have won Best Cafe in the Barnsley Shop Awards, created delicious and affordable lunch time and pre-theatre dining menus, and will be serving up a slap-up Christmas meal to those who would otherwise be alone on Christmas day.

Fifth Birthday 2014

The Civic has been providing Barnsley with high-quality events and exhibitions for over five years. To celebrate this we had a fun-filled day of free shows and activities back in May. The sun certainly had its hat on was a delightful day, with performances from Children’s Touring Theatre Company Tell Tale Hearts and classical pianist An-Ting Chang.

Bike Show

Gallery@ has also had an exciting year with BIKE SHOW selected as part of the Yorkshire Festival to celebrate the Grand Depart of the Tour De France in Yorkshire.  The Civic’s curator David Sinclair comments, “It was fantastic to be included in such a spectacular event… all in all, it’s been a great year“, followed by a series of exhibitions and events to commemorate 30 years since The Miners’ Strike, which effected so many of the Barnsley community.

Michael Parkinson

Earlier this year we were ecstatic to announce the award winning talk show host and author Sir Michael Parkinson as our first patron to support The Civic’s work. There will be an ‘evening with Parky’ event on the 18 May. Partnerships have also been created with other charities and organisations such as Dementia Action AllianceVisit Barnsley and their new website (www.visitbarnsley.co.uk), the National Union of MineworkersBarnsley Music Education HubBarnsley HospiceBarnsley Premiere Leisure, Barnsley Football Club and The Ahead Partnership.

And it’s been a delight to welcome so many young people to The Civic this year.  Barnsley Music Service moved into the building in March and lots of local schools and colleges have been visiting our theatre and gallery; feedback from the children and teachers has been wonderful! Donna Turner (Performing Arts Course Leader from Barnsley College) commented: “The students thoroughly enjoyed the creative workshop [Red Ladder Theatre Company] conducted, looking at elements of both the script, and some of the musical content. It was also a particular treat to be welcomed into the theatre space and to participate in the workshop. We all really enjoyed the performance of the show combined with the exhibitions at the Civic

“2014 was a very special year for us. We received the fantastic news that Arts Council England have selected us to be part of their national portfolio until 2018, we had the opportunity to be part of some very important anniversaries and events for Barnsley and we have also had the pleasure of welcoming lots of new people through our doors to enjoy some brilliant shows and events”. Helen Ball, Chief Executive
