2013 has been a special year for the Barnsley Metropolitan Band who are celebrating their 40th anniversary.
Not only did they win their section of the Yorkshire Area Brass Band Championships in Bradford’s St Georges Hall last March, they went on to be placed 4th when representing Yorkshire against 19 champions from other regions of the UK at the National Finals held in Cheltenham last month.

As part of their celebrations they plan to make their annual festival of band music ‘Bandfest 2013’ even more special than usual. This year’s event will feature both Unite the Union City of Sheffield Band and Skelmanthorpe Band who are both in the brass band premier championship section, performing alongside Barnsley Metropolitan Band and Barnsley Town Concert Band. However the special feature of Bandfest 2013, will be a Re Union Band, made up of players from the last 40 years. This band will rehearse on the morning of Saturday 16 November and go on to perform a selection of music from the repertoire of the last 40 years in the evening. Players from across the UK from Cardiff to Edinburgh will be travelling back to Barnsley to perform and many instruments will be taken out of their cases for the first time in years. Having performed together there will be a chance to meet up, socialise over lunch and have a drink the following day. It is hoped that past members and their families and friends (currently playing or not) will come and share memories, photos and memorabilia whilst enjoying some great music making.
