Students from across Barnsley College can now learn Spanish thanks to staff member and native Spanish-speaker, Maria Sutton.
Originally from Mexico, Maria works as a Personal Progress Mentor at Barnsley Sixth Form College and has previously taught Spanish A Level. As her first language is Spanish she’s now utilising these skills and offering weekly Enrichment classes to all college students with a total of 22 in the first cohort.
A Level student Jack Turton, 17 of Ripley Grove, Redbrook, added: “I thought it would be great to learn the basics of Spanish alongside my A Level studies and I’m enjoying the Enrichment classes.”
To boost her own skills, Maria has also recently secured a place on a two-week scholarship run by internationally renowned Salamanca Universities. The scholarship will enable Maria to further her professional knowledge and learn new ways of teaching Spanish and she is one of only 120 people worldwide to gain a place on the course which takes place in July.
Enrichment classes are generally held on Wednesday afternoons and allow students from across college to take part in additional activities, such as sign language, sports or debating, alongside their main studies.
