Gambian visitor inspires students

Barnsley College Level 3 IT students recently welcomed a visitor from The Gambia to speak to them in their tutorial group.

Muctarr Bojang, known as Mucki, from Mansa-Colley Bojang Nursery School in The Gambia visited Barnsley College after being invited by student Danny Bisby who used to study at the college.

Mucki explained to the students how education is very different in The Gambia. He said: “There is no electricity at the schools and often there is only one teacher to fifty students. Pupils share a pencil between three and there are no computers. There is only one college in The Gambia and it is only open to the wealthy.” The students were inspired to help out and had a collection to buy a selection of stationery to be taken for the children at the school by Danny and his family during their visit.

Mucki added: “It was good to speak to the students, I am amazed by the resources available and class sizes at Barnsley College, I encourage the students to take advantage of all the opportunities they have offered to them.”

Danny, of Thicket Lane, Worsbrough Dale, said on his return: “The trip was extremely rewarding. Giving time to help those who need it really puts the things we take for granted into perspective. It was an amazing trip and I will definitely be returning next year.”

The IT students are planning a sponsored walk to raise further funds to help the school.
