As we start the countdown to the festive season, the days getting shorter and the holes in our pockets getting bigger, The Civic welcomes a few comedy favourites to spread some additional laughs.
Mark Steel (top) & Sophie Willan (bottom)
Fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Sophie Willan is back by popular demand with her debut solo show. Radio Sheffield Breakfast presenter and well known comedian Toby Foster presents two upcoming comedians in his Last Laugh Comedy Club. And Mark Steel is back in town, pledging to discover just what makes Barnsley ridiculous, based on his popular Radio 4 series.
Heart-warming and hilarious, Sophie Willan tells the unbelievable true story of how she and her slightly psychic Gran, found her long lost father. It’s an interactive ‘who-is-it?’ fusing stand-up comedy and theatrical chaos to tell a story of fantasy, failure, grief, love, and ultimately of hope. In this whirlwind of a one-woman show, expect laughs, tears, confetti and lots of detective spoofery! Sophie is “a bright emerging star” BBC COMEDY.
Toby Foster with Rich Wilson and Christian Reilly
Toby Foster’s Last Laugh Comedy Club presents comedy club regular Rich Wilson and King of Quips musical comedian Christian Reilly. A Salvation Army alumni and solo stand-up performer, Christian’s comic songs, improvisations, sharp wit and youthful energy have delighted audiences wherever he performs. “This genuine, trendy, confident comedian has a natural talent for risky jokes, song and quips which you can’t help laughing at! If you get the chance to see Reilly live, do so. He is not to be missed!” funny.co.uk. And with Rich Wilson you are guaranteed a fantastic evening of top class entertainment – discussing subject matters ranging from being a young father to observational material on the absurdities of life in general. “He’s a very very funny man” FRANK SKINNER.
And finally, as the armies unleashed by Tescos, chain stores, and assorted call centres continue in their effort to make everywhere miserably identical, Mark Steel will coming to town with a “mission to save civilisation“, proving that Barnsley is a “a far better audience than the miserable arses from down the road”. Bringing an element of Mark Steel’s In Town to each live show on this tour, Mark promises pictures, ranting and a whole lot of material shedding light on the quirkiness and interesting aspects of every town and city he visits, something the residents of Barnsley will devour and enjoy!
