Sportworks Logistics Ltd, the event management company responsible for the Cannon Hall Run have entered into liquidation. Barnsley Hospice, the official charity partner of the race was told by directors of Sportworks this week that the company had entered administration. The hospice has since worked with Barnsley Council to secure the rights to the eventensuring that Barnsley Hospice can run a fantastic event for all participants. The hospice, at Gawber, was facing the possibility of losing an estimated £6,000 in income and sponsorship from the race.
Finance director at the hospice Nici O’Dowd said ”At first we thought that the race on September 8th would have to be cancelled and felt disappointed for the 260 runners already signed up to the run, 55 of them for the hospice. Barnsley Hospice did not want runners to feel let down or for the race not to go ahead and have therefore taken over all responsibility from Sportworks for the organisation of the event”.
“Barnsley Hospice would like to reassure all runners of its commitment to the Cannon Hall Run and is looking at all aspects of the race, including the route, to ensure it meets the high standards expected by participants.”
The fundraising team at Barnsley Hospice will be contacting runners registered via Sportworks to provide them with a point of contact if they have any questions about the run. Barnsley Hospice will not receive registration fees already paid by runners via Sportworks. It is hoped that those registered might make a donation to help the hospice cover the costs of staging the event.
For those runners already committed to raising funds for Barnsley Hospice there is no change. Hospice volunteer Judy D’All said “As a volunteer for the hospice it’s important for me to support Barnsley Hospice in different ways that I can with the time that I can allow. I do a few charity runs so the Cannon Hall Run was one I couldn’t miss out! For me, Barnsley Hospice provides patients with a number of things; aside from the great care, it gives patients, family and friends respect and dignity”.
The Cannon Hall Run is a fantastic training run for the Great North Run on 15th September or a great charity challenge if it is your first or second 10KM race. The route is fun and bold; taking in some of Barnsley’s best green spaces.

It costs over £9,000 a day to run Barnsley Hospice, which has ten beds for inpatient care and provides day care in its Limes Support and Therapy Centre as well as a wide range of other services. It has to find £2m on top of its NHS grant of £1.6m every year and relies heavily on volunteers, donations and sales at its nine shops around the borough.
