Introducing the U3A

The U3A movement has around 440,000 members in the UK. Originally, they were ‘The University of the Third Age’, a learning organisation for retired people but are now known just as ‘U3A’ and 1,250 retired and semi-retired people in the Barnsley area attend its 130 different activity groups that take place all over Barnsley and Penistone. Some people are in just one group, one person is in fourteen! Barnsley U3A is one of the most vibrant, exciting U3As in the country! Hundreds of their members come to us from Wakefield, Sheffield, Rotherham and other towns. They must be doing something right!

The emphasis nowadays is simply fun, enjoyment and meeting up with other people. The aim is to stop older people from feeling lonely, alone and isolated; we try to put a structure into people’s weeks. If you are interested in Art, Music, History, Walking Football, Brass Bands, Walking, Singing, Sewing, Cosmology, Magic, Crown Green Bowling, Ten-Pin Bowling, Photography, Country Dancing, Poetry, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Snooker, Local History, Eating Out, Canasta, Magic, Gardening, Maths, Geology, Yoga, Sequence Dancing, Birdwatching … the list goes on and on and on to 130 different groups and all at a minimal cost, just £1 per session.

They are constantly looking to add new groups. If you want to know more, call 01226 891130 or 0751 220 6285 or explore online at https://u3asites.org.uk/barnsley/home
