The Civic’s theatrical offerings this season start with literature greats Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare cleverly condensed into two fast-paced ‘pocket-size’ performances, followed by a mid-week theatre treat from award-winning national touring theatre company Pilot Theatre.
And a libretto from the acclaimed poet, Civic Champion and Barnsley Bard Ian McMillan, also takes to the stage.
From Adam Long, founding member of The Reduced Shakespeare Company and co-creator of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) comes Dickens Abridged – a fast-paced musical comedy; “With more wit than Martin Chuzzle, Adam Long has worked his minimising magic on another great writer.” Official London Theatre. A talented cast of four bring hundreds of the great author’s best-loved characters to life in 70 minutes of Dickens’ Greatest Hits. Including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, David Copperfield, Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop, and A Christmas Carol. It also delves into the bizarre-but-true story of Charles Dickens’ own life, including his complicated romantic entanglements. A singing, dancing love-letter to the life and works of the great man and unlike any Dickens-based show you’ve ever seen before.
The sun was beating down on the beach. Five shots rang out and a man fell to the ground. A nameless Arab, dead.
