Music For All Folk at The Civic

Following the huge success of this weekends’ Evening with The War Horse Songman with Bob Fox, folk audiences across the region are in for a treat at The Civic over the coming months!

Double BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominees Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker join us at the end of the month at The Civic with ageless stories of love and loss infused with their exquisite command of many instruments. Whether interpreting words centuries old or singing her own authentic lyrics, Josienne’s jewel-like voice finds the nuance in the simplest phrase and sends it, effortlessly, straight to your heart. Ben’s musical tact and flair for arrangement provide the perfect setting, allowing the song centre-stage. The live performance is a thing of delight – enchanted reviewers have spoken of ‘shimmering cathedrals of sound’ – and its purity will stay with you long after the last note fades.

“A wistful soundscape of longing….arresting stuff” (Independent On Sunday)

Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker’s next album Nothing Can Bring Back the Hour is one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

And two of the British folk scene’s most accomplished performers, Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman have graced stages the world over in a number of guises, however, you’re invited to witness the intimacy and strength of passion they show as a duo, combined with an eclectic repertoire – a rare treat.

With a story that includes music making with the likes of Seth Lakeman, Cara Dillon, Levellers, Kate Rusby and Show of Hands, barnsley-born Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman have established themselves as pillars of modern British folk.

On latest album Hidden People Kathryn says; “These are stories, first and foremost,” but she warns: “My home-life is so ‘roses round the cottage door’, that I tend to prefer music with an edginess, so some of the tracks on the album are quite dark and brooding, to say the least.” The messages and meanings behind these songs belong to the “hidden people”.

“Thoughtful ballads to stomping acoustic rock, an impressive and entertaining set” (The Guardian)
