Barnsley residents and businesses are being urged by a scheme to get on their bikes and cycle more with CycleBoost.
CycleBoost is a free three-part cycling support service for residents and employees in Barnsley aimed at removing the barriers that prevent people from cycling.
Barnsley’s Digital Media Centre (DMC) will be acting as a hub for the new scheme. Businesses will be able to come to the DMC on March 30 for a taster session from 11am – 2pm.
Through CycleBoost you can loan a bike, learn how to maintain and repair your bike and even learn how to ride.
The scheme is delivered by Inmotion! on behalf of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and allows a bike to be loaned over a four week period, the bikes are then able be purchased for a discounted price.
Centre manager of the DMC, Gareth Scargill, said: “As a home to over 40 businesses the DMC is an ideal host for CycleBoost. With the Tour de Yorkshire set to come through the town, it’s the perfect opportunity for Barnsley to replicate the show it put on last year and we’re hoping lots of people come down and take advantage of this great scheme.”
Participants also get the benefit of a ‘Ride Reward Card’ giving them access to discounts and deals across the town from participating businesses.
Suzy Smith, Sustainable Travel Officer, BMBC said: “CycleBoost has already successfully helped staff at similar local businesses get to work in a greener way. Together with our Inmotion! partners, we are delighted to work with DMC along with other employers to help staff move their commute away from the car and give cycling a try. The scheme supports employees to choose cycling as a safe, healthy and comfortable way to travel to and from work, and could even help employees’ wellbeing and productivity when they’re at work.”
The CycleBoost scheme will run between April 14 and May 12 – just in time for the Tour De Yorkshire, which now includes Sir Bradley Wiggins, and is passing through Barnsley Town Centre on May 3.
