The venue has undergone a rebrand with the downstairs bar becoming a fully fledged cocktail bar and indie music will be played all weekend rather than just a Friday night.
‘Our Friday Indie Nights have been so successful, we feel we have to cater more for the towns large indie music community,’ Co-owner John Asquith informs. ‘There aren’t many places for Indie fans to go to in Barnsley on a Saturday night – they have to venture out to Leeds or Sheffield. We want people to be able to enjoy some excellent music with quality cocktails in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in Barnsley. We’ve got a whole new decor and updated the lighting. We hope people will be able to come in and enjoy a relaxing cocktail made fresh in front of them in the downstairs bar, and then go upstairs to have a dance and sing-a-long to some classic and new Indie tunes.’
This Saturday sees the opening night for the refurbished bar and popular Ibiza Rocks DJ Nicola Bear will be spinning the decks. ‘She has played here before, and been so popular we couldn’t wait to get her to come back,’ John tells us. ‘People will be surprised with what music she plays, and what special twists she throws in.’ Opium hope to be bringing in more big name DJs to entice the indie fans to come out on a Saturday night.
The bar will still be hosting the Burn Down the Disco Indie Disco on a Friday night with resident DJ Tom Hemmingway. ‘On a Friday, we’re always amazed at how many people are dancing to Exit Calm and Toba Caldera,’ John explains of two local bands. ‘Some people may not realise who they’re dancing to, but the music always goes down really well.’ For this reason, the club has teamed up with local DJ Sally Altass, who plays unsigned music on her internet radio show The Unsigned Side. ‘We want local bands to send in music to The Unsigned Side, and Sally will chose a record of the week, which will be played at midnight in the bar on a Friday night. It’s an excellent opportunity for local bands to have their music heard and for people to dance to it!’
Opium will be serving lots of cocktails from the classics such as Mojito and cosmopolitan to amaretto sours and a few signature tipples all made using fresh ingredients and premium spirits.
