Players from Barnsley College’s Rugby Academy received expert tips when Yorkshire Carnegie Rugby Club players Harry Casson and Matt Smith visited the college.
Yorkshire Carnegie session
Barnsley-based Matt and his fellow second row Harry ran a training session for a mixed group of players, which covered techniques such as tackling and decision making, followed by a game where they were able to put these skills into practice.
The Rugby Academy is open to all students at Barnsley College, whether they are studying sport or not.
Matt said: “It was great to run the session for the students. We focused on technical aspects of the game before giving the players the opportunity to transfer these skills into a game situation.
“I live in Barnsley and know that football is traditionally more popular than rugby so it was encouraging to see a mixed group of talented students enjoying the game at the college.”
Tony Martin, Barnsley College Rugby Academy Coach, added: “The students really appreciated Harry and Matt putting on a session which has finely tuned their skills. It will be really beneficial as the students are very committed to improving their game and will go away and reflect on what they have learned.”
