School Pupils Introduced to College Sports Academies

Pupils from South Yorkshire schools took the opportunity to sample life at Barnsley College’s Sports Academies during the Easter holidays.

The Year 11 students took part in special taster sessions at the college’s specialist Cricket, Football, Netball, Rugby and Refereeing Academies, ahead of beginning their studies at the college in September.

The Sports Academies are open to male and female students on any college course so they can develop their sporting skills alongside their studies.

Shafton ALC pupil Greg Gerrard attended the cricket taster sessions over Easter and has applied to study Construction at college. He said: “The sessions allowed me to gain confidence by meeting other people who will be coming to college in September. It will be good to move onto my college course.”

Ecclesfield School pupil Jack Thomas attended the rugby taster sessions and has applied to study Sport at college. He added: “It was great to see what the rugby academy is like and who I will play with. I am looking forward to the freedom of studying at college.”

The college will run further taster sessions for Year 11 students in the Spring Bank half-term week on the following dates: Tuesday 26 May – Football, Netball and Refereeing; Wednesday 27 May – Cricket and Rugby.

These sessions are open to all school pupils who can still apply to the college for September 2015 entry and attend the sessions.
