Students from Barnsley College were acknowledged for their outstanding achievements at the sixth annual Barnsley College Excellence Awards.
The awards ceremony, held at Barnsley Metrodome, saw a total of 27 awards presented, including awards for each College department and cross College awards such as Apprentice of the Year, Adult Learner of the Year, Youth Achievement and Youth Progress.
In his nomination, Course Leader Jo Kyte said: “Reece has developed into a positive and motivated student, he has received offers from all the Universities he has applied to due to his exceptional personal statement and predicted distinction grade.”
Guests were entertained by students from the Media, Music and Performance Department and Barnsley Sixth Form College including a violinist, singers, dancer and a four-piece acoustic rock band.
The keynote speaker for the evening was Dr John Tanner. John is the project manager with Barnsley Museums, a part of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council (BMBC) and he has worked for five years to create the Award Winning Experience Barnsley Museum and Discovery Centre. John is also an Associate Lecturer in History at Sheffield Hallam University and gave a fascinating insight into the many achievements and varied successes of historical figures from Barnsley, explaining how local people have made a significant impact on the world through hard work and determination.
John said: “I was thrilled to be asked to speak as I am passionate about Barnsley and its history; I hope that some of the inspirational students we saw tonight will become the pioneers of the future.”
The event also had the inaugural showing of the charity DVD made by and featuring staff and students at the College. The video of Dolly Parton’s hit ‘9 to 5’ was made to raise funds for EnRich, a charity set up in the name of the late Richard Tolson, a much respected tutor at the College who sadly passed away last September.
Barnsley College Principal Colin Booth added: “As always, our awards evening was a fantastic way to celebrate the amazing achievements of our students over the past year. This event is always one of the highlights of the year and it is thanks to the kind support of our sponsors that it is made possible. I am proud to be Principal of such a dynamic and high-achieving College and the Excellence Awards provide a fitting tribute to those students who go above and beyond in their studies and in College life.”
