The Civic, Barnsley is a multi-storey, multi-purpose arts centre seeking to bring wide-ranging, contemporary artforms to appreciative audiences from Barnsley and beyond.

As a proud supporter of the arts in South Yorkshire, The Civic showcases high-quality performances and exhibitions not usually associated with a centre of its size or regional location, and is instrumental in bringing world-class touring theatre, music and arts groups en route to larger UK cultural centres and other venues around the globe.

Knitwear: Chanel to Westwood Exhibition

This exhibition charts inspirational vintage fashion knitwear from the 20th century. Highlights of the exhibition include Knitwear designs by Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, 1930s woollen swimwear, 1970s Bill Gibb and conceptual garments from 1980s and 90s designers Comme des Garçons, Vivienne Westwood and Julien MacDonald.

Yorkshire Fashion Archive Exhibition

Based in the School of Design and underpinned by research excellence in textiles at the University of Leeds, the Yorkshire Fashion Archive is a publically accessible collection of haute couture, fashion garments and everyday clothing.

Shapeshifter (Lawrence Speck)

The local town is up in arms! Apparently there’s a shapeshifter living amongst them and who knows what’s going to happen… Join Lawrence on this exciting adventure into Britain’s spooky past. Using a concoction of storytelling, puppetry, comedy and an original score, Shapeshifter promises to be a fantastic theatrical experience.

Pygmalion (London Contemporary Theatre)

A comedy about a Henry Higgins, a phonetics expert who, as a kind of social experiment, attempts to make a lady out of uneducated flower girl, Eliza Doolittle. This version will feature the brilliant music of the 60’s that is loved now by people of all ages.

Shakespeare Schools Festival

The Civic is thrilled to welcome local school children to the stage as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival. Performing four different Shakespeare plays; you will see Shakespeare performed as you’ve never seen it before!

Shoe Kangaroo and the Big Bad Boot (Garlic Theatre)
