The Civic’s Got Talent

Britain’s Got Talent may have been running for eight years, but why wait for your annual dose of variety, when it’s on all year round at your local theatre? Swap your sofa for The Civic’s new seating rake, and your TV dinners for delicious dining at the on-site Oak Star Café & Bistro. Put down that remote control and put your hands together, to applaud the brilliant British Talent at The Civic in Barnsley.

Barnsley Hospice and The Civic have come together to bring the lovely ladies of Barnsley a great Girls Night Out! With shopping and a fabulous Fashion Show to raise awareness and funds for both charities. Barnsley’s very own The Closet Queen will be the headline retailer for the evening; offering a flurry of funky fashion for women of all shapes, sizes and ages. Table tickets have already sold-out for this one-off fundraising event with only general tickets available, so put your highest heels on, and strut your stuff down to what we are sure will be an exciting event!

Discover your own creative talent and come along to a theatre workshop on Wednesday 22 April and an artist workshop on Saturday 2 May. Enter the multi-sensory world with pioneering East Yorkshire based Theatre Company in the Engine Room Experience, and take part in a hands-on theatre workshop; where you can explore, play and create alongside members of the company. For the practicing artists and printmaking enthusiasts out there: try stencils, collograghs, monoprints and letterpress to create one off prints in the DIY Print workshop inspired by the current A World to Win: Posters of Protest and Revolution exhibition in Gallery@.

British boys bring dazzling debut show, packed full of jaw-dropping acrobatics and a breath taking Cyr wheel routine. The all-male trio met at the National Centre for Circus Arts in London and found a fantastic chemistry in their mix of skills of free running, martial arts, breakdancing and contortion, to become the Barely Methodical Troupe – a new wave of modern circus. It’s not just for clowns and performing elephants; their award-winning Bromance will flip your idea of contemporary circus on its head! Bromance is a warm and witty exploration of trust, intimacy and male friendships. Directed by Frantic Assembly’s Eddie Kaye, it’s set to a cool soundtrack of original and found sounds. A standout hit at the 2014 Edinburgh Fringe Festival it’s ‘frisky and risky, pointed yet playful [and] well worth seeking out.’ (The Times)

And finally, “cinematic, breathtaking and beautiful” (Songlines) folk quartet redefine British folk music with their very special blend of Northumbrian traditional tunes and systems music. Spiro have performed at festivals in the UK, and worldwide attracting fanatical enthusiasm from their increasing audiences who follow their performances with an almost religious awe. Their approach to their music is unique, breathtaking and seems impossible, even as you watch it. Jane Harbour explains “We’re like a string quartet, but the most driving and exciting string quartet that you could imagine.” Inspiring and impossibly intricate, Spiro are sure to provide you with a beautifully brilliant, astonishing live experience.
