Comedian, journalist, novelist and activist Rob Newman makes a hotly anticipated return to comedy, with his first complete show in seven years.
This “passionate, chaotically brilliant comedian” (The Sunday Times) is joined at The Civic this season by Elvis McGonagall, stand-up poet, armchair revolutionary and recumbent rocker, and internationally acclaimed Canadian stand-up comic Craig Campbell.
Rob Newman – Theory of Evolution
Rob’s new theory of evolution is summed up in the phrase ‘survival of the misfits’. Rob argues that all species originate from misfits pushed to the edges of ecological tolerance in tiny populations; an exploration of the exciting new discoveries over the last decade in the field of evolutionary biology and an attack on Selfish Gene theory, Rob argues that Darwinism is a much richer thing than Dawkinism, and that Dawkins is totally un-Darwinian.
Recumbent rocker Elvis McGonagall is the sole resident of The Graceland Caravan Park where he scribbles verse whilst drinking malt whisky and listening to Johnny Cash. A regular guest of BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live, Elvis “combines anger, polish and carefully crafted verse in a way which recalls John Cooper Clarke” (The Scotsman). As an extra bonus Joe Kriss from, Yorkshire-based poetry company Word Life will also host an open mic session, followed by a performance from regional poet Raph Attar, “the most exciting new artist in Britain” (Nick Grimshaw – Radio 1)
