University Campus Barnsley (UCB) is offering a brand new creative course in Commercial Gallery Management, developed with the Director of Cupola Art Gallery in Sheffield.
Cupola Art Gallery (Sheffield)
The two-year course is a Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Art and Design, created to give artists and those interested in art and design the skills to curate and run a contemporary gallery.
Students will be based at UCB however much of the course work will be delivered within a contemporary art gallery located in Barnsley town centre. Students will manage and run the gallery alongside their studies. Professionals within the gallery business will share their knowledge, insights and support to offer the most comprehensive understanding of the business side of the art world currently available.
Ian Latham, Head of Department of Art and Design at UCB, said: “This is a great opportunity to combine art and design with business studies in a live retail environment. I am pleased that we will be working with a number of industry experts, in particular Karen Sherwood, Director of Cupola Contemporary Art Gallery in Sheffield, who has developed the course with us.”
As well as learning the business side of gallery management, students will take part in workshops including printmaking, ceramics, wood and metalwork and painting to develop knowledge of the art that will be commissioned and curated, and individual units can be taken independently. The course will start in February.
