In the running for Best Independent Retailer with top design outlets from across the region, YSP Shop was selected to take the prize by a panel of industry experts, including Red or Dead founder Wayne Hemingway; interiors expert and TV personality, Linda Barker; Geoff Alsop (RIBA Chairman); Sir Terence Conran and garden designer Diarmuid Gavin.

On receiving the award, YSP Buyer Amanda Peach, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled and honoured to have brought home the award for Best Independent Retailer. We strive to offer our customers a memorable shopping experience, whether they’ve come as part of a wider visit to YSP or have made a special journey to shop here. It is great recognition for what we do and will act as a driving force for new ideas in the year ahead.”

Wayne  Hemingway said of his involvement with the awards: “As a proud northerner and designer, I was excited to have the honour of both judging and hosting the Northern Design Awards this year. There is a great deal of passion, drive and talent in the north and these awards serve to recognise and reward those who go the extra mile. Winning such accolades can do wonders for businesses large and small and I encourage people to enter and be a part of this great event.”

By working closely with artists and designers and collaborating with exhibiting artists at YSP, the shop offers sought-after brands such in addition to bespoke and specially commissioned pieces. Established in YSP’s award winning visitor centre in 2002, the shop opened with a small selection of craft, books and gifts. The dedicated team has transformed the shop over the past decade and it now enjoys a reputation as one of the best museum stores in the UK.
